The Maximilian Room, once the men’s parlor and smoking room, derives its name from Emperor Maximilian of Mexico.

Inside the room, 8 large gold leaf mirrors hang on the walls. These mirrors were originally commissioned for the Emperor’s wife, Empress Carlotta, and her image is reflected at the top of each mirror.
According to a staff member at the Driskill, the mirrors were discovered in an antique store in San Antonio, but they now reside within the Driskill. Interestingly, the story of how they ended up in Texas remains a mystery.
Legend has it that many believe Empress Carlotta haunts the mirrors.
